Rome in February is the insider's choice. The Colosseum, Vatican Museums, and Borghese Gallery all operate with a fraction of the summer crowd, the city's food culture is entirely unaffected by season, and the light in the Trastevere and Campo de' Fiori neighbourhoods in winter is genuinely excellent. Valentine's Day brings a spike in romantic tourism: hotels in the historic centre see prices rise sharply around the 14th. Italy home matches in the Six Nations also bring visitor numbers up around those specific weekends.
Weather
February averages 5C to 12C. Rain is possible. The city is cooler than visitors often expect, particularly in the morning and evening. A mid-weight coat, layers, and comfortable walking shoes cover most conditions. Snow is genuinely rare but Rome has had notable snowfall in recent years: the Colosseum and Spanish Steps under snow are images that circulate widely because they happen infrequently but memorably.
Crowds and Prices
Low season for most of the month. The Vatican Museums are substantially quieter and advance ticket booking is easier to secure. The Colosseum requires advance booking year-round but February availability is better. Hotel prices in the historic centre are at low-season rates except around Valentine's Day and Six Nations Italy home match weekends, when central accommodation prices spike noticeably.
What's On
Valentine's Day is a significant event in Rome's restaurant scene, with the city's romantic credentials fully deployed. Italy in the Six Nations plays at the Stadio Olimpico, and those weekends bring rugby visitors from around Europe to the city. Rome Carnival (Carnevale Romano) runs in the weeks before Lent with events in the historic piazzas. The city's classical music and opera season is active through winter.
One Thing to Watch
The Vatican Museums require advance booking and the queues for same-day entry are long even in winter. Do not plan to turn up and walk in on a February morning. Book tickets at least a week in advance and go early. The Sistine Chapel is worth the organisational effort but the effort is real.
