April is one of Rome's most popular months and one of its most demanding. The city is at its most beautiful: warm, light, and historically atmospheric. Easter brings enormous crowds and one of the world's most significant Catholic events. Come in April knowing the trade-offs: brilliant weather and atmosphere, high prices, and sites that require advance planning or you will spend your trip in queues.

Weather

April in Rome brings daytime temperatures of 15C to 19C, with mild evenings around 9C. Sunshine is common and the light on the ancient city is extraordinary. Spring showers are possible but short. A light jacket is useful but rarely essential during the day. April is simply good weather in Rome.

Crowds and Prices

Rome is one of the world's most visited cities and April is peak season by any practical measure. Easter week is the extreme: the Vatican, the Colosseum, and the major museums reach their annual capacity peak. Prices for central accommodation spike sharply from Holy Thursday through Easter Monday. Book everything in advance: accommodation, Colosseum and Roman Forum tickets, Vatican Museums tickets. All of them. Months ahead if your dates touch Easter.

What's On

Easter at the Vatican is the centrepiece. The Pope's Urbi et Orbi blessing from St. Peter's Basilica on Easter Sunday draws enormous crowds to St. Peter's Square. Good Friday's Via Crucis (Stations of the Cross) at the Colosseum is one of the most visually powerful events in the Catholic calendar. April 21 is Rome's traditional founding date (Natale di Roma) and is marked with events and celebrations.

One Thing to Watch

Vatican Museums tickets during Easter week sell out completely. Book the Vatican at least four to six weeks ahead if your visit touches Holy Week. For the Colosseum, timed entry tickets are mandatory and must be booked online. If you are arriving in Rome without tickets for the Vatican and Colosseum, you are gambling on cancellations or paying a premium for last-minute tour packages.

Our Rome guide covers the Colosseum, the Vatican, the hidden neighbourhoods, and how to navigate the Eternal City efficiently.
