Rome in November: What to Expect

Rome in November is a significantly better experience than Rome in July or August, and most people have worked this out. The crowds have thinned but not vanished entirely, the weather is genuinely pleasant rather than oppressive, and the eternal city gets on with being 2,700 years old without several thousand cruise ship passengers attempting to photograph it from the same angle.

Weather

Temperatures range from 8°C to 15°C through November, with some rain and partly cloudy days. Rome in November can deliver crisp, clear days with beautiful light across the ruins and the skyline, punctuated by rainy spells. A light-to-medium jacket and one waterproof layer covers most situations. The city is a walking city and the weather is comfortable for walking in November.

Crowds and Prices

Significantly lower than spring and summer. Hotel prices in the Trastevere, Prati, and Monti neighbourhoods are well down from peak rates. The Colosseum and the Vatican Museums require advance booking throughout the year, but November slots are more available and the queues at entry points are shorter. The Pantheon, the Trevi Fountain, and the Roman Forum are all more accessible.

What's On

All Saints' Day on November 1 is a public holiday in Italy, with some museums and services running on reduced hours. The wider November calendar is quieter on major events, but Rome's classical music season runs through the autumn with concerts at the Auditorium Parco della Musica and various church venues.

The city's neighbourhood markets, including Campo de' Fiori and Porta Portese, operate normally. November is when Rome's food culture, particularly the trattorias of Trastevere and Testaccio, feels most authentically itself.

One Thing to Watch

Both the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums require timed entry tickets booked well in advance, including in November. Don't assume that low season means walk-up availability at these two sites. Book before you travel.
