Weather

August in Rome averages 32 to 35 degrees Celsius, with humidity from the surrounding hills making it feel heavier. The city's stone and concrete surfaces accumulate and radiate heat. Walking the major sites between 11 AM and 4 PM in August is a workout that many visitors underestimate.

The approach: start at 7 or 8 AM. The Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Palatine Hill in the morning light and morning air are a different experience from midday. Retreat to a cool interior or a good lunch restaurant from noon to 4 PM. Resume in the late afternoon. Eat dinner at 9 PM when Romans eat.

Crowds and Prices

The Vatican Museums, including the Sistine Chapel, are at maximum capacity in August. Timed entry tickets require booking weeks in advance; turning up without a ticket and joining the walk-in queue is a multi-hour commitment in August sun. The Borghese Gallery operates strictly timed entry; book the earliest available slot.

Hotel prices in August are high, with the centre around the Pantheon and Campo de' Fiori at their peak rates.

Estate Romana runs throughout August, with open-air cinema, concerts, and events at locations across the city including the Baths of Caracalla. Summer opera at the Baths of Caracalla is one of the most spectacular outdoor cultural experiences in Italy.

Ferragosto on 15 August is Italy's most important national holiday. Many Romans leave the city entirely for the beaches of the Lazio coast.

One Thing to Watch

Ferragosto closures are concentrated around 15 August but extend for days or weeks either side for many businesses. Neighbourhood restaurants in Testaccio, Pigneto, Prati, and the residential north of the city may be entirely closed. The tourist-facing restaurants near the major monuments stay open. Research specifically which restaurants are open on the days you're visiting if eating well is important to your trip.
