April in Reykjavik is a transition month. Winter is receding, daylight is growing fast (Iceland gains several minutes of daylight per day in spring), and the Northern Lights are on their last reliable window of the season. The landscape is dramatic but still very much in the grip of the cold. It is a good month to visit if you want a balance of long days, possible aurora sightings, and lower summer pricing.

Weather

April in Reykjavik averages 3C to 8C. Snow is possible, particularly early in the month. Wind is significant and the famous Icelandic changeable weather applies in full force: you can experience four seasons in one day. Pack serious layers: a warm base layer, an insulating mid-layer, and a windproof and waterproof outer shell. Gloves and a warm hat are essential, not optional.

Crowds and Prices

Iceland's tourism season peaks in June to August. April is shoulder season and noticeably cheaper. Flights, accommodation, and tours are all lower priced than summer. The Golden Circle and South Coast day tours from Reykjavik run throughout April and are less crowded than in summer. The Blue Lagoon requires advance booking regardless of season.

What's On

Aurora Borealis: April is the last reliable month for Northern Lights in Iceland. The dark hours are shrinking fast and by late April the sky is too light overnight. Early April offers the best chance. Tours depart nightly when conditions are right. The Reykjavik Arts Festival runs in May and June. The DesignMarch festival typically falls in March.

One Thing to Watch

Northern Lights visibility requires dark skies, clear weather, and solar activity. April's window for darkness closes fast as the month progresses. If the Northern Lights are a priority, visit in early April and add a dedicated aurora tour to your itinerary. Do not rely on seeing them from the city: you need to leave the light pollution. Our Reykjavik guide covers the city, the Golden Circle, and how to structure a visit to one of the world's most dramatic destinations.
