June is the month the midnight sun makes Reykjavik genuinely surreal. Around the summer solstice (21 June), the sun barely dips below the horizon and it never gets dark. It's one of the most striking experiences you can have in any European city. The trade-off is that June is peak season with peak prices. Worth it.
Weather
Temperatures reach 10-15°C in June, which is modest but far more comfortable than Iceland in winter. Rain and wind are always possible: Iceland's weather is changeable in any month. The long daylight hours more than compensate for the cool temperatures. Pack waterproof layers, a warm mid-layer, and dress for wind. Sandals are not the move.
Crowds and Prices
Reykjavik's tourism boom means June is expensive and busy. Flights and hotels cost significantly more than in winter, and the popular Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon day trips book up weeks ahead. Iceland's tourism infrastructure is well-developed, but the gap between high and low season prices is steep. Book everything in advance, particularly if travelling around the solstice.
What's On
The Summer Solstice (around 21 June) is the headline. Many Icelanders celebrate Jonsmessa (St John's Mass eve on 23 June) with outdoor gatherings and bonfires. Reykjavik Pride falls in late July and early August, but June brings various cultural events around the solstice and Reykjavik's arts scene is active. The Secret Solstice music festival runs in June in the city, featuring concerts in unusual venues including ice caves and lava tubes.
One Thing to Watch
The midnight sun affects sleep significantly. Hotel rooms in Reykjavik have blackout curtains, but if you're in self-catering accommodation without them, bring a sleep mask. The temptation to stay awake when it's daylight at midnight is real and the tiredness compounds after a few days. Manage your sleep or you'll spend the second half of your trip exhausted in the most spectacular landscape in Europe.
The ConciseTravel Reykjavik guide covers the Golden Circle, the Northern Lights (off-season), and how to make the most of the midnight sun without wrecking your sleep schedule.
