Los Angeles in summer has a reputation built around sunshine, beaches, and outdoor living that is mostly accurate but comes with a notable asterisk: June Gloom. The coastal marine layer that settles over much of LA in June and sometimes into early July means mornings that are overcast and cool, often clearing to sun by early afternoon. By late July and August the gloom clears and the city delivers the golden California summer most visitors expect. Temperatures range from comfortable coastal highs of 22 to 24 degrees near the beach to 32 to 35 degrees in the Valley and inland areas.

The Heat/Weather Strategy

Los Angeles is not one climate: it is several. Santa Monica and Venice Beach run 5 to 8 degrees cooler than Hollywood or downtown in summer, and significantly cooler than the San Fernando Valley or Pasadena. Where you are spending your time determines what you need to pack.

Rain is extremely rare from June through September. The focus is purely on sun, varying warmth levels, and the micro-climate shifts as you move between coast and inland.

City-Specific Must-Haves

Sunscreen is the most important item regardless of where in LA you are going. The sun here is strong and persistent once the June Gloom clears. SPF 50 applied daily, reapplied in the afternoon, particularly if you are at the beach or outdoors.

A light layer for coastal areas and June mornings. The marine layer and the Pacific breeze keep the beach areas cool. A light denim jacket, a cotton sweatshirt, or a thin cardigan covers this. Heading from Santa Monica to the Valley in the same day means packing for two different temperatures.

Comfortable walking shoes for the non-car-based parts of the trip: Venice Beach boardwalk, the Getty Center, the Griffith Observatory walk, and the Hollywood Hills. LA is more walkable in specific pockets than its car-city reputation suggests.

Swimwear for the beach days, which are genuinely central to the LA summer experience. A rash guard adds UV protection for long beach days.

Sunglasses with proper UV protection. Los Angeles light, particularly near the coast and on clear days, is intense.

A smart casual outfit for rooftop bars, West Hollywood restaurants, and the more polished venues around Beverly Hills and Brentwood. LA dresses well when it dresses up, but "dressed up" here is more stylish-casual than formal.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy rainwear is completely unnecessary from late June through August. June Gloom calls for a light layer, not waterproofing.

Very formal clothing is unnecessary unless you have a specific occasion. LA's dining scene is upscale-casual at its dressiest.
