May is a good time to visit Los Angeles. The weather is warm and largely sunny, the notorious June Gloom marine layer hasn't fully set in, and it's not yet peak summer season when prices rise and beaches get crowded. For a first-time visitor trying to navigate LA's sprawl, May offers comfortable conditions and good value.
Weather
Temperatures in May typically range from 17°C to 25°C, with mostly sunny skies. The marine layer from the Pacific can bring morning cloud cover to coastal areas, particularly the west side, but it usually burns off by late morning. Rain is rare. Light summer clothing is ideal, with a light layer for evenings and cooler coastal areas like Santa Monica and Malibu.
Crowds and Prices
May sits between spring break crowds and the summer peak, making it a relatively good period for tourism. Theme parks like Universal Studios and Disneyland (in Anaheim) are past spring break but not yet at peak summer volume. Hotels and flights are typically cheaper than June through August. Memorial Day weekend at the end of May is the one exception, when prices spike and beach traffic becomes very heavy.
What's On
The Cannes Film Festival takes place in the south of France in mid-May and has a ripple effect on Hollywood: some industry events and screenings happen in LA during this period, and the city has an elevated buzz around film. It doesn't directly impact tourists but adds to the atmosphere.
May is a strong month for outdoor events, open-air cinema screenings, and food festivals in LA. Cinco de Mayo on 5 May is widely celebrated across the city with events in East LA and various neighbourhood festivals.
One Thing to Watch
Los Angeles requires a car for most meaningful exploration. Public transport exists but covers the city unevenly, and many of the experiences that make LA worthwhile, the drive along PCH, the viewpoints above Hollywood, the beach towns from Santa Monica to Malibu, are best accessed with your own vehicle. If you're not renting a car, plan your itinerary carefully around areas served by the Metro and ride-sharing rather than trying to see the whole city.
