April is a great time to visit Los Angeles. The weather is warm but not the heavy summer heat, the beaches are less crowded than summer, and Coachella in the Coachella Valley (about 2 to 3 hours east) creates an energy in the wider LA area that makes the city feel particularly alive. If you are planning a Southern California trip, April is a compelling window.
Weather
April in LA brings daytime temperatures of 20C to 24C, with mild nights around 13C. Low cloud (June Gloom arrives later) is less common in April. Sunshine is the norm. The beach towns (Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach) are pleasant for walking and cycling without requiring sunblock at every moment. Pack light layers: a light jacket for evenings, sunscreen for the middle of the day.
Crowds and Prices
LA is large enough that crowds vary dramatically by neighbourhood and attraction. April is not peak tourist season, but Coachella (typically two weekends in mid-April) drives significant visitor numbers to the greater Southern California area. Hotels in LA, Palm Springs, and the Coachella Valley charge premium rates for those specific weekends. Outside Coachella weekends, April is very manageable.
What's On
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival (mid-April, two weekends) is the obvious headline, about 2.5 hours east of LA in Indio. The LA Marathon typically falls in March. The Academy Awards season wraps up in February or March, but its cultural energy lingers. The Dodgers and Angels baseball seasons begin in late March and April games are excellent value for visitors.
One Thing to Watch
Traffic is a constant in LA. Planning your days around geography rather than chronology makes a significant difference. Do not combine a morning in West Hollywood with an afternoon in Pasadena. Pick a corridor (West Side, Central, East Side) and work within it. April traffic is not dramatically different from other months, but the awareness of geography matters all year.
