Los Angeles in February is a legitimate sweet spot. The temperature is comfortable for walking and outdoor activity, the peak summer crowds are months away, and February brings one of the city's defining cultural moments in the Academy Awards. If you are not specifically chasing beach weather, February is actually an excellent time to explore the city's neighbourhoods, museums, and food scene. The one caveat is rain: February is technically LA's wet season, and storms can arrive without much warning.

Weather

February averages 10C to 20C. Most days are warm and clear, but February is the wettest month of the year for LA. Rain arrives in concentrated bursts, sometimes heavy, separated by days or weeks of perfect sunshine. A light jacket for evenings and a waterproof for rain days is the packing brief. The beach is not swimming weather but is entirely walkable.

Crowds and Prices

Lower than peak season. Universal Studios, the Getty, and the most popular hiking trails in Griffith Park are all more accessible. Flights from Europe are cheaper than summer. Hotel prices in Santa Monica and West Hollywood are below their peak levels. Valentine's Day has minimal impact on accommodation prices despite LA's reputation as a romantic destination.

What's On

The Academy Awards typically fall in late February or early March, and the awards season is in full ceremony mode throughout the month. The Grammy Awards often fall in February. Oscars weekend in Hollywood is genuinely atmospheric if you are in the city. The LA Art Show and various gallery openings run through February. The Chinese New Year parade in Chinatown is one of the city's best street celebrations if it falls in February.

One Thing to Watch

Los Angeles requires a car or significant ride-share budget. The public transport system has improved but does not connect the city's key areas efficiently. If you are planning to cover Santa Monica, Hollywood, Griffith Park, and Downtown in the same trip, factor in transport time and cost from the start. This is not a walkable city between neighbourhoods.

The Los Angeles city guide covers the neighbourhoods, the logistics, and the best of the city.
