Los Angeles in January is cooler and quieter than the summer version, and for many visitors that's an improvement. The beach scene is subdued, but the city's museums, food culture, and entertainment industry operate as normal. January is one of the more sensible months to visit LA if you're not primarily there for the beach.
Weather
Daytime temperatures average 18°C to 21°C in January, dropping to around 9°C at night. The city occasionally gets rain, and January is one of the wetter months by LA standards. Clear days are common and the light is excellent. A light jacket for evenings is needed. The ocean is cold for swimming, around 14°C.
Crowds and Prices
January is lower season for LA tourism, particularly for beach-focused visitors. The Getty, LACMA, and Griffith Observatory are more accessible. Hotel rates on the Westside and in Santa Monica tend to be lower than in summer, though central LA and WeHo remain consistently priced.
What's On
The Golden Globe Awards typically take place in early January, adding a layer of entertainment industry energy to the city. The Rose Bowl Parade on New Year's Day is a Pasadena institution. January also is the start of award season, which means screenings, premieres, and general Hollywood activity.
One Thing to Watch
LA's wildfire season peaks in autumn, but January Santa Ana winds can occasionally cause fire risk in surrounding areas. Check conditions before driving to the hills or canyons, and monitor any active advisories during your visit.
