Los Angeles in autumn is still largely sunny and warm, but it is a different proposition from the peak summer months. September and October are genuinely good: Santa Ana conditions can bring unexpectedly warm days, the beach is viable, and the air quality on clear days reveals the mountains above the basin. November cools noticeably, particularly inland and in the evenings, and coastal fog becomes more common in the mornings. LA is one of those cities where locals and visitors consistently underestimate how cool the evenings get.

The Autumn Layering Problem

September in LA averages 25-29 degrees in the day, very warm and often sunny. Evenings cool to around 18-20 degrees along the coast. October drops to 22-26 degrees in the day, with evenings around 14-17 degrees. November averages 18-22 degrees in the day, but evenings can drop to 10-13 degrees, particularly in the hills and inland.

The wide variation across the city adds another layer of complexity. Santa Monica and Venice Beach run cooler and foggier than Pasadena and the San Fernando Valley. If you're spending time across different parts of the city -- and LA almost requires it -- you're dressing for different microclimates within the same day.

Los Angeles-Specific Essentials

A reliable jacket for evenings. This is the item that surprises most visitors. A leather jacket, a light wool layer, or a bomber jacket handles October and November evenings at rooftop bars, outdoor restaurants, and the Hollywood Bowl without being excessive.

Sunscreen and sunglasses. The California UV index in September and October is high and the sun angle is deceptive. This is not a summer-only consideration.

Comfortable walking shoes for varying terrain. LA involves more walking than its car-dependent reputation suggests, plus hiking in places like Griffith Park and Runyon Canyon where paths are dusty and uneven. Trainers with good grip handle both city streets and park trails.

Layers for the beach-to-inland range. A morning at Venice Beach and an afternoon in Pasadena can see a 10-degree temperature difference. A packable mid-layer in your bag bridges this without requiring a full wardrobe change.

Smart casual options for dinner. LA restaurant culture ranges from very casual to elevated. Pack at least one option that works for a nicer dinner -- not formal, but intentional.

Swimwear for September and early October. The Pacific is cold year-round but September and October beach time is viable. Pack swimwear if you're there before November.

What to Leave Behind

Heavy winter coat. Los Angeles in autumn does not require serious cold-weather outerwear. A good jacket handles the worst of it.

Only summer clothes. September daywear is summer, but nothing else is. November evenings without a layer leave you cold.

Sandals for all-day walking. Venice boardwalk in sandals works. A full day of walking different neighbourhoods is more comfortable in supportive trainers.

LA Autumn Opens Up the Outdoors

The heat of summer easing means Griffith Park hikes, the Getty Center gardens, and the outdoor dining scene are all more comfortable. The city's range of experiences across beach, hills, and urban neighbourhoods becomes more accessible in autumn conditions.
