Los Angeles in September is a very good month to visit. The city doesn't have a true off-season, but September brings slightly lower visitor numbers than peak summer, continued excellent weather, and the feeling of LA returning to its regular rhythm after the tourist-heavy July and August.
Weather
September in Los Angeles runs between 20 and 28°C, with the kind of warm, dry, sunny days that the city's reputation is built on. The marine layer that creates June Gloom has usually cleared by September, meaning beach days at Santa Monica and Venice Beach are reliably good. Pack summer clothes, sun protection, and a light layer for evenings, which can cool quickly once the sun drops. The San Fernando Valley and inland areas can run a few degrees hotter than the coast.
Crowds and Prices
The summer crowd thins from mid-September as school resumes across the US. Theme parks at Universal Studios and Disneyland (Anaheim) see shorter queues from mid-month. The most popular hiking trails in the Santa Monica Mountains and Griffith Park are less congested. Hotel prices along Santa Monica and West Hollywood drop from peak summer rates, though LA remains expensive by any comparison. Flights from the UK, which were at their most expensive in summer, are cheaper.
What's On
The Emmy Awards typically take place in September, which adds a visible industry energy to parts of West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. The LA County Fair runs through the month in Pomona. September is also when the city's outdoor film screening season, including events at Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, reaches its end of season events. The surf at Malibu and El Porto is active throughout September.
One Thing to Watch
Traffic is the city's permanent practical problem and September doesn't change that. The 405 and the 10 are slow at rush hours regardless of month or season. Build extra time into every journey, use the metro where it actually goes (Downtown, Expo Line to Santa Monica, K Line to Inglewood), and don't assume that because somewhere looks close on the map it will be quick.
