Lokrum Island sits 500 meters offshore from Old Town's harbor, close enough to see from the walls, far enough that it feels like genuine escape. It's a forested nature reserve with a monastery, Game of Thrones filming locations, roaming peacocks, and surprisingly good swimming. A 15-minute ferry ride takes you there; you can stay for a few hours or the whole day.
How to Get There
Ferries depart from the Old Town harbor, right at the foot of Pile Gate. The boat ride takes 12-15 minutes and costs 100 kuna (~€13.50) return. Ferries run every 20-30 minutes during the day (8 AM-6 PM in summer) and the ride itself is pleasant enough to justify the cost.
Buy tickets at the kiosk directly at the harbor. No advance booking needed. The boat accommodates 40-50 people per trip and rarely fills completely except at peak midday hours. Off-season (October-April), boats run less frequently.
The ferry operates year-round, but the island is genuinely cold and grey in winter. Summer (May-September) is when you actually want to visit.
The Island Itself
Lokrum covers 4.5 hectares and is mostly forested with pine, cypress, and Mediterranean plants. The forest provides shade, which is a genuine relief from Dubrovnik's relentless summer heat. Peacocks roam freely (20+ of them), and they're surprisingly bold—they'll follow you, eat from your hand if you have food, and pose for photos.
The monastery: A 15th-century Benedictine monastery anchors the island's center. It's mostly ruins now, but the cloister is atmospheric and photo-worthy. The monks originally kept a botanical garden here, and traces of it remain.
Game of Thrones locations: Lokrum was used as "Qarth," the House of the Undying location, in Season 2. There's a thematic garden (called the Thrones Garden) with a replica iron throne you can sit on for photos. If you're a GoT fan, it's a pilgrimage site. If you're not, it's just a garden with a throne-shaped sculpture.
Naturist beach: The northwestern edge has a designated nudist cove (Sunčalica). It's clothing-optional, surprisingly relaxed, and genuinely mixed (locals, tourists, families). No judgment, just established norms. Stay out if nudity makes you uncomfortable.
Regular swimming: The south and east sides have rocky shores where you can swim. The water is clearer than Old Town's waterfront and significantly less crowded. Bring a towel and consider water shoes—the rocks are sharp.
What to Bring
Water: There's a small cafe on the island selling overpriced drinks (30 kuna for water, 40 kuna for coffee). Bring your own and save the cash.
Snacks: Pack sandwiches or fruit. The cafe serves basic sandwiches for 50-60 kuna if you're desperate.
Sunscreen: The island has shade from trees but also exposed sections. Don't underestimate the sun reflecting off water and stone.
Swimwear: You'll want to swim. Bring whatever you're comfortable with—regular or nudist, entirely your choice.
Shoes: Water shoes or sandals. The rocks are sharp, and you'll regret bare feet. The forest paths are okay in regular shoes.
Time Breakdown
Stay 3 hours: Walk the main paths, see the monastery, sit on the iron throne, swim, have lunch at the cafe. Leave by noon if you arrived early morning.
Stay 5-6 hours: Walk the full circuit, explore every corner, swim twice, relax on the rocks, eat, people-watch. This is the ideal length. Arrive early (9-10 AM), leave late afternoon.
Stay full day: Only if you're truly desperate to escape Dubrovnik. The island is small enough that you've seen everything by afternoon. Most people find 4-6 hours perfect.
The Honest Take
Lokrum is worth the ferry ride as a half-day break from Old Town intensity. The peacocks are genuinely magical, the swimming is better than anywhere else nearby, and the forest is an actual respite from crowds.
The Game of Thrones appeal depends on your fandom. If you love GoT, the iron throne is a bucket-list moment. If you've never watched, it's just a garden with a sculpture.
The nudist beach is surprisingly unpretentious and not a draw unless that's your thing. Most visitors never even see it.
Practical Logistics
Bring everything you need because the cafe is expensive and limited. Water, food, sunscreen, swimwear. Budget 200-300 kuna (~€27-40) total: ferry (100 kuna) + maybe a cafe snack (50+ kuna) + miscellaneous.
Ferries get crowded around noon and again at 4 PM when day-trippers leave together. Arrive early (9-10 AM departure) and you'll have the island nearly to yourself for an hour. Smart timing transforms the experience.
