May is one of the better times to visit Dubrovnik, but let's be honest: this city is already busy by late spring. The Old Town walls and main streets fill up fast, especially on days when cruise ships dock. Go in expecting that and you'll have a great trip. Go in expecting a quiet corner of Croatia and you'll be disappointed.
Weather
Temperatures range from 16°C to 23°C in May, with plenty of sunshine and low rainfall. The Adriatic is still cool for swimming, typically around 18°C, but beach days are perfectly pleasant. Light summer clothes work during the day, with a light layer for evenings. It's excellent sightseeing weather.
Crowds and Prices
Dubrovnik is one of Europe's most visited small cities, and it doesn't really have an off-season anymore. May is noticeably quieter than July and August, and prices for accommodation are lower, but crowds are still present. Cruise ship days, usually Tuesday through Thursday, push visitor numbers significantly. Check your specific dates against the port schedule if you can and plan accordingly.
What's On
1 May is Labour Day in Croatia, a public holiday. Some local shops close, but the city's tourist infrastructure keeps running. It's actually a pleasant day to explore, as many locals are also out enjoying the sunshine.
Dubrovnik Summer Festival doesn't start until July, so May misses the main cultural calendar. That said, the city hosts occasional concerts and events in the Old Town, and the general ambience of warm evenings in the limestone streets is its own reward.
One Thing to Watch
Cruise ship days transform the Old Town between around 9am and 5pm. The narrow streets become genuinely difficult to navigate when multiple ships dock on the same day. If you're staying overnight, use those hours for a day trip to the Elafiti Islands or Konavle, and reclaim the city in the late afternoon and evening when the day-trippers leave and the atmosphere improves dramatically.
