Dubrovnik in July and August is the cautionary tale of overtourism done at scale. The Old Town fills beyond comfortable capacity, cruise ships dock daily, and the walls become a slow-moving queue in the heat. September is a different experience. Not perfect early on, but significantly better from mid-month.

Weather

September in Dubrovnik runs between 22 and 27°C, with the Adriatic still very warm and excellent for swimming. It's genuinely beach-weather for most of the month. By late September it cools slightly and the evenings feel autumn-like, but the days remain warm. Bathers and cape walkers both get what they need. Pack summer clothes, good walking shoes for the Old Town's stone streets, and one warmer layer for evenings.

Crowds and Prices

Early September in Dubrovnik still has the cruise ship problem. Ships dock in the morning and their passengers flood the Stradun before most people have finished breakfast. From around September 15th the cruise ship frequency drops and the Old Town becomes genuinely walkable. The city walls, which are one of Europe's great short walks, can be done in a pleasant hour rather than a shuffling two-hour ordeal. Hotel and apartment prices drop sharply after the first week, and the ferry connections to the nearby islands remain fully operational.

What's On

Dubrovnik's summer festival season typically runs through July and August, with outdoor performances in the Old Town. By September the festival programme has wound down, but the city's regular bar and restaurant scene continues without the summer pricing pressures. The island day trips to Lokrum, Mljet, and the Elaphiti Islands continue through September and are worth doing in quieter conditions than midsummer.

One Thing to Watch

Walk the walls early. Even in September, the wall walk can get warm and crowded by 11 AM. Go when they open in the morning and you'll have the best views of the Old Town rooftops, the Adriatic, and Lokrum island without the shoulder-to-shoulder experience of peak hours.
