Dubrovnik in October is a very different proposition from Dubrovnik in July. The cruise ship hordes are gone, the Old Town's marble streets aren't baking in 35°C heat, and you can walk the city walls without feeling like you're in a conveyor belt. The city gets genuinely peaceful, which is either exactly what you want or a sign that October is cutting it a bit close to shoulder season. Either way, you should know what you're walking into.

Weather

Pleasant and cooling. Early October sits around 18-22°C, which is ideal walking weather. Late October drops to 14-17°C, still comfortable by day but requiring a layer in the evenings. Rain increases as the month progresses. The Adriatic is still swimmable in early October for those who aren't precious about it. The light over the Old City walls in October is genuinely spectacular.

Crowds and Prices

Dramatically quieter than summer. This is one of the biggest transformations of any city on this list. Dubrovnik in July and August is exhaustingly crowded, to the point where the city has had to add crowd management measures. By October the city has thinned significantly and the Old Town becomes something you can actually explore rather than shuffle through. Hotels are cheaper and some all-inclusive resorts begin closing, which concentrates the remaining visitors into the Old Town and Lapad areas.

What's On

The Dubrovnik Autumn Festival wraps up but the city's restaurant scene stays lively through October. Local restaurants that were overwhelmed in summer have time for their guests again. The Game of Thrones filming locations are year-round but October tours are much more intimate. A boat trip to the Elaphiti Islands is still viable in early to mid-October.

One Thing to Watch

October is when Dubrovnik starts closing down for the season. Some restaurants, bars, and boat tour operators close from mid-October onwards. By late October the choice narrows meaningfully. Do your research before you go, check that your must-do restaurants and activities are still operating, and don't arrive assuming everything will be open. This is the trade-off for the quiet and the lower prices, and it's worth knowing about before you land.
