Four days in Dubrovnik is generous. The Old City walls, the Stradun, and the core sights of the old town can be covered in two solid days. Four days gives you the Old Town properly and two excellent days for day trips along the Dalmatian coast, which is where a Dubrovnik trip really earns its reputation.
What 4 Days Unlocks
The city walls are the starting point and they take a couple of hours done properly: stopping to look out to sea, finding the angles that make the orange rooftops and the Adriatic glow, and dodging the worst of the cruise ship crowds if you time your walk for early morning.
With the walls done, you have the Stradun, the Rector's Palace, the Franciscan Monastery with its medieval pharmacy (one of the oldest in Europe), and Fort Lovrijenac. These fill two days without needing to rush.
But four days unlocks the coast. The Elaphiti Islands, a short ferry ride from the city, offer a completely different pace: smaller, quieter, and deeply beautiful. Mljet National Park, further along the coast, has saltwater lakes in a pine forest and is one of the most extraordinary natural settings in the Adriatic. The Pelješac Peninsula and its wine villages are another option.
Lokrum Island is just 15 minutes by boat and has peacocks, a botanical garden, and a saltwater lake for swimming. It's an easy half-day from the city and makes a good counterpoint to the Old Town crowds.
What You'll Still Miss
Montenegro and its Bay of Kotor are about two hours from Dubrovnik by car and often described as one of the great short drives in this part of Europe. Four days makes it a stretch unless you're specifically building the itinerary around it.
Split, further up the coast at about three hours, deserves its own visit rather than a day trip, though some people do the trip. Four days in Dubrovnik won't reach it comfortably.
How to Structure 4 Days Well
Day 1: the Old City on foot. Walk the walls in the morning before the cruise ships arrive. The Stradun, the Franciscan Monastery, and the Old Port in the afternoon.
Day 2: Fort Lovrijenac, Rector's Palace, and the quieter streets behind the main drag. Sunset drinks from somewhere above the water. Lokrum Island if the afternoon is free.
Day 3: Elaphiti Islands by ferry, or Mljet National Park. These are different experiences and both are excellent. Pick based on whether you want swimming or hiking.
Day 4: slow morning in the Old Town, wander the harbour, find the neighbourhoods just outside the walls. Easy afternoon before departure.
