Four days in San Francisco is a well-rounded trip. The city is smaller than most American cities of its reputation, and four days gives you enough time to cover the famous areas, explore a few neighbourhoods that aren't on every itinerary, and get out to Marin County or the wine country north of the city. San Francisco rewards going slightly beyond the obvious and four days gives you the room to do that.

What 4 Days Unlocks

The Golden Gate Bridge is not just a photo opportunity. Walking across it on a clear morning, with the bay on one side and the Pacific on the other, is one of the genuinely great urban experiences in the United States. It takes about 45 minutes each way and is better from the Marin headlands side for the views back to the city. Four days means this is a morning, not a detour.

Alcatraz needs to be booked well in advance. The audio tour of the prison, narrated by former inmates and guards, is one of the best audio guides at any tourist attraction anywhere. Evening tours are available and add a different atmosphere.

The neighbourhoods are where San Francisco's character lives: the Mission for its murals, burritos, and Latino culture; the Castro for its LGBTQ+ history; Haight-Ashbury for its 1960s counterculture heritage; and the Richmond and Sunset districts for the best dim sum in a city that does dim sum very well.

Muir Woods, the cathedral-like coastal redwood forest across the Golden Gate, is 30 minutes by car or bus and one of the most extraordinary natural environments accessible from an American city. Day trips to Napa or Sonoma for wine country are about 90 minutes by car.

What You'll Still Miss

The Silicon Valley tech companies are south of San Francisco and not particularly accessible or interesting from a tourist perspective without a specific purpose.

The East Bay, Oakland, and Berkeley have their own distinct characters and are underexplored from a San Francisco base. Oakland's food scene in particular has surpassed San Francisco's in several areas of honest assessment.

How to Structure 4 Days Well

Day 1: Fisherman's Wharf and the waterfront. Ferry Building Market for breakfast, Embarcadero walk, Pier 39 (briefly), and Alcatraz in the afternoon if you've booked.

Day 2: Golden Gate Bridge walk in the morning, Presidio, and the Marina. Mission District in the afternoon for tacos and murals.

Day 3: Muir Woods day trip, or wine country. Come back via Sausalito and take the ferry back to the city.

Day 4: North Beach and Chinatown in the morning. Castro and Haight in the afternoon. Evening in Hayes Valley or Nopa.
