Dubrovnik in March is almost the inverse of Dubrovnik in July. The Old Town is quiet enough to walk the city walls without shuffling along in a queue, restaurants have space, and prices are significantly lower. The cruise ships have not arrived for their seasonal runs, and the city actually belongs to visitors who walk slowly and eat well. For anyone who has seen the summer horror show, March is the answer.

Weather

March temperatures in Dubrovnik range from around 9°C at night to 14°C to 15°C during the day. Sun is common but so is rain, particularly early in the month. The sea is still cold (around 14°C), so swimming is not on the agenda. A light jacket and a waterproof layer are essential. Late March sees temperatures pushing to 17°C or 18°C on good days, and the Old Town in sunshine is genuinely beautiful.

Crowds and Prices

March is Dubrovnik's true off-season. The City Walls, Stradun, Rector's Palace, and the cable car to Mount Srd are all accessible with minimal waiting. The cable car is one of the city's best experiences and has almost no queue in March. Hotels within and just outside the Old Town walls are significantly cheaper than summer, when prices are among the highest of any European coastal city. Fly-drive combinations from the UK are very affordable in March.

What's On

Dubrovnik's event calendar is quiet in March. The city's cultural season is primarily focused on summer with the Dubrovnik Summer Festival in July and August. Some restaurants and smaller guesthouses that close for winter reopen in March, so by mid-month the city is operating more fully. Check which specific places you want to visit have reopened for the season before booking.

One Thing to Watch

Some facilities on the islands, particularly Lokrum which is a popular half-day trip from Dubrovnik, operate on reduced or seasonal schedules in March. Boat services to the Elaphiti Islands may also run less frequently than summer. If island trips are part of your plan, check current schedules rather than assuming summer frequency applies.
