Two days in San Francisco is tight but a real visit. The city is compact relative to most American cities, and the main neighbourhoods are walkable or connected by a transit system that actually works. You'll cover the landis and a couple of neighbourhoods without feeling like you've rushed everything.
What You Can Cover in 2 Days
Two days in San Francisco:
- The Golden Gate Bridge. Walk across it. The one-way pedestrian crossing takes about forty-five minutes. The views on a clear day are excellent. Go in the morning before the afternoon fog typically rolls in.
- Fisherman's Wharf and the Ferry Building. The Wharf for Alcatraz departure and the sea lions at Pier 39. The Ferry Building for the Saturday farmers' market and the best food stalls in the city. Book the Alcatraz ferry in advance.
- Alcatraz. A ninety-minute audio tour of the former federal prison on an island in the bay. It's worth the ferry ride. Book weeks in advance; it sells out.
- Mission District and the Castro. Two of the city's most characterful neighbourhoods, both accessible by BART or on foot from the centre. The Mission has the best burritos and the most interesting street murals in the city.
What You'll Miss
Two days in San Francisco:
- Muir Woods. The cathedral redwood grove north of the city is one of the most impressive natural experiences in California. It needs a half-day and advance booking for parking or transport. It competes with everything else on this list.
- Haight-Ashbury and the Upper Haight. The neighbourhood of the 1960s counterculture is interesting and usually cut on two-day visits focused on the waterfront.
- Wine country. Napa and Sonoma are an hour north of San Francisco. Both need a full day and compete with the city for priority on a short visit.
- The full bay. The bay itself, Berkeley, and Oakland across the water are a different San Francisco that most short visitors never see.
How to Make the Most of It
- Book Alcatraz as soon as your travel is confirmed. It sells out weeks or months ahead. This is the most critical booking in San Francisco.
- Use Muni and BART. San Francisco's public transport is better than most US cities and covers the main areas well.
- Combine the Golden Gate with a walk to Sausalito. The bridge walk to Sausalito and a ferry back takes a full morning and is one of the best half-day experiences in California.
- Eat a Mission burrito, not a tourist burrito. La Taqueria or Taqueria Cancun are the names. Don't eat Mexican food in Fisherman's Wharf.
The Honest Verdict
Two days in San Francisco covers the landis and two good neighbourhoods. The fog, the hills, and the bay make it unlike any other American city, and two days is enough to feel that. Book more time if you can.
