Krakow and Zakopane are an unusual combination that works better than it sounds: a city dense with history and a mountain resort that doubles as a hiking base. Two hours apart by bus, they contrast sharply and give each other context.

Why This Combination Works

Krakow is urban, historical, and emotionally weighted. Zakopane is the Polish Highlands: timber architecture, sheep's cheese sold on roadsides, and the Tatra Mountains rising sharply behind the town. Coming from Krakow's cobblestones and castle, arriving in Zakopane feels like arriving in a different country. That's the appeal.

For a week: 4-5 nights Krakow, 2 nights Zakopane. For 5 nights: 3 nights Krakow, 2 nights Zakopane. A day trip from Krakow to Zakopane is possible if your time is short, but 2 nights gives you a proper hiking day plus the experience of the town itself.

Getting Between the Cities

Direct buses run regularly from Krakow's main bus station (near Krakow Glowny train station) to Zakopane. Journey time is around 2 hours and tickets cost roughly 15-25 PLN (3-6 EUR) each way. FlixBus and PKS Polonus both serve the route. There are also minibuses (busy and faster in practice) from various points in Krakow. No train connection worth considering.

Start in Krakow. It's the main event, the flight hub, and the more complex destination. Zakopane is the mountain exhale at the end.

What Each City Adds to the Trip

Krakow

Krakow is one of Central Europe's great cities, and it didn't get the wartime destruction that levelled so many others, so the Old Town is remarkably intact. Wawel Castle, the Main Market Square, the Kazimierz Jewish quarter, and Schindler's Factory Museum are the headline sites. Auschwitz-Birkenau is 70km west: sobering, essential, and a full-day commitment. Budget at least 3 full days to do the city justice without feeling rushed.

Zakopane

Zakopane is a mountain resort, not a city, and it makes no pretence otherwise. The main street (Krupówki) is tourist-facing and worth about 20 minutes of browsing for oscypek (smoked sheep's cheese, the local speciality). The real reason to come is the hiking. The Tatra National Park starts immediately south of town, and trails range from easy lakeside walks to serious ridge hikes. Morskie Oko (Eye of the Sea) lake is the most popular route and worth the effort. Go early in the morning to beat the crowds.
