Come in early December for the best balance of festive atmosphere and manageable crowds.

Weather

Classic west of Ireland: cold, wet, and windy. December temperatures sit around 5°C to 9°C, with Atlantic rain a frequent companion. The Aran Islands and Connemara coast look dramatic in this weather, but you should not plan coastal day trips without checking forecasts and accepting that wind may limit what you can do. In the city itself, none of this matters much: Galway's compact centre means you're always close to a warm pub. A good waterproof jacket is the most important thing you'll pack.

Crowds and Prices

Galway is a smaller city than Dublin, so the Christmas market and the festive season concentrate the crowds into a compact area. Eyre Square on weekend afternoons can feel very busy. Flights from the UK go via Dublin or Shannon, and fares are reasonable in early December. The week before Christmas is when Galway fills up with Irish visitors returning to the west, and accommodation in the city centre books out fast. Early December offers better availability and lower prices.

What's On

The Galway Christmas Market on Eyre Square runs from mid-November through 22 December. It's one of Ireland's better Christmas markets: Austrian chalets, live music, good street food, and a genuine atmosphere rather than the slightly generic feel of some UK equivalents. The market has a Ferris wheel and an ice rink, and it gets properly busy in the evenings. Shop Street and Quay Street are lit up through December, and the pub trad sessions in Tigh Coili, The Crane Bar, and Monroe's run most nights through the month. The pub scene is genuinely the strongest case for a December visit.

One Thing to Watch

The Aran Islands ferry from Rossaveel operates year-round but is subject to cancellation in rough weather, which is more common in December than any other month. If an Aran Islands day trip is important to your trip, build in flexibility for weather delays or cancellations rather than planning it as a fixed point.
