The bike ride from Fisherman's Wharf to Sausalito via the Golden Gate Bridge is the most popular cycling route in the Bay Area and one of the better urban bike routes in the world. It covers 12 km one way, crosses the most famous bridge in the United States, and ends in a small waterfront town from which a ferry returns you across the bay to the Ferry Building. The return trip by water replaces the hill back — which is the reason the route works so well in this direction.
The Route
Start: Fisherman's Wharf (most bike rental shops are here). Head west along the waterfront path through Aquatic Park and Crissy Field — a flat, car-free path along the bay with views of the bridge ahead.
Crissy Field to the Bridge: the path runs through the Presidio, a national park covering the northwestern corner of San Francisco. Mostly flat with one short climb before the toll plaza. The approach to the bridge from the south gives you the bay on one side and the Pacific entrance on the other.
Across the Bridge: the eastern bike lane is typically shared with pedestrians (the western lane is cyclists-only on certain days — check the bridge's website for the current schedule). The crossing takes 15–20 minutes. The views are the obvious reward. The wind mid-span is reliable and cold — even in July.
Descend to Sausalito: a steep descent from the north end of the bridge down into Sausalito. The braking is significant; keep speed controlled. The descent takes about 10 minutes.
Sausalito: a small waterfront town with galleries, cafes, and the Bay Model Visitor Center (a large hydraulic model of the San Francisco Bay and Delta, used by the Army Corps of Engineers and free to visit). The town is pleasant and busy on weekends with cyclists doing the same route.
Ferry Back
The Golden Gate Ferry runs from Sausalito Ferry Terminal to the San Francisco Ferry Building. Bikes are allowed on the ferry (verify with the operator and time of day — some peak sailings have bike restrictions). Journey time: approximately 30 minutes. The Ferry Building arrival is one of the better entrances to San Francisco.
Ferry fare: approximately $15. Bikes: additional fee.
Bike Rental
Multiple rental shops operate near Fisherman's Wharf, including Blazing Saddles (several locations), Bay City Bike, and Wheel Fun Rentals. Standard rental: $35–50 per day. Electric bikes are available for an additional cost and make the hills easier.
Guided bike tours of the same route are available through Viator and local operators — useful if you want commentary along the way.
Practical Notes
The bridge is open to cyclists daily, but hours vary — check the Golden Gate Bridge website for current schedules. Morning crossings (before 9 AM) have fewer pedestrians on the shared lane and better fog-free conditions in many months. Bring a jacket; the bridge is consistently colder and windier than the rest of the city.
Our Take
This is a half-day well spent. Leave Fisherman's Wharf at 9 AM, cross the bridge, eat lunch in Sausalito, ferry back by 2 PM. The combination of the waterfront path, the bridge crossing, the bay ferry, and the Ferry Building arrival covers more of what makes San Francisco distinctive than almost any other single activity.
