The Lisbon Card promises unlimited public transport, free museum entry, and other perks. Sounds great on paper. But is it actually worth your money, or is it a tourist trap that loses you €20 a day?
Let's do the math.
What You Get with Lisbon Card
The Lisbon Card comes in three flavours: 24 hours (€20), 48 hours (€35), 72 hours (€50). Here's what's included:
Public Transport (unlimited):
- All metro lines
- All trams and buses
- Regional trains to Sintra and Cascais
Museum Entry (free):
- Jerónimos Monastery
- São Jorge Castle
- Belém Tower
- National Tile Museum
- National Museum of Archaeology
- And 15–20 others (depending on current deals)
Other Perks:
- Discounts at some restaurants and shops
- Hop-on/hop-off tour bus inclusion (sometimes)
The Real Math
Let's test whether a 24-hour card saves money. Say you're a typical visitor planning two big museum days.
Without Lisbon Card:
- Jerónimos Monastery: €12
- São Jorge Castle: €10
- Belém Tower: €6
- National Tile Museum: €5
- Public transport for 2 days: €11 (24-hour pass) + €11 (second day) = €22
- Total: €55
With Lisbon Card (24-hour):
- Card cost: €20
- Museums: FREE
- Transport: FREE (included)
- Total: €20
Savings: €35. Worth it.
But here's where it gets tricky: if you skip one of those museums or use transport less, the maths flips.
When It's Actually Worth It
You should buy it if:
- You're visiting for 2–3 days
- You plan to visit 3+ major museums
- You'll use public transport frequently (moving between neighbourhoods, Sintra day trip)
- You hate calculating costs
A realistic 24-hour itinerary that justifies the card:
- Morning: Jerónimos + Belém Tower (€18 separately)
- Afternoon: São Jorge Castle (€10)
- Evening: 4–5 tram/metro rides (€7.50)
- Total value: €35.50. Card costs €20. You win by €15.
When It's Not Worth It
Skip it if:
- You're only doing a 1–2 day visit focused on walking/neighbourhoods
- You're not planning major museum visits (Jerónimos, castle, tower cost €28 total, and that's your main unlock)
- You dislike the feeling of being rushed to "get your money's worth"
A typical budget traveller's 24 hours:
- Walk Alfama, take Tram 28 (€1.50)
- Visit one museum like Tile Museum (€5)
- Wander, eat, sit in cafés (no cost)
- One Uber home (€15)
- Total: €21.50. Card costs €20, saves you €1.50—not worth the pressure.
Hidden Costs and Fine Print
- The card doesn't include all museums. The big ones (Jerónimos, castle, tower) are included, but smaller places like the Design Museum or Fado Museum have discounts only, not free entry.
- Beaches, viewpoints, and Belém district are free—you don't need a card for those.
- The regional train to Sintra is included, but you can buy it separately for €3 (return). Not a huge unlock.
- Restaurant/shop discounts are sparse and rarely worth your time checking.
The Honest Verdict
For most visitors, a 24-hour card is marginal. You'll save money only if you commit to hitting 3+ paid attractions and actually using the public transport pass. If you're the kind of traveller who moves slowly and enjoys wandering, you'll overpay.
The math only decisively favours the card if:
- You're doing Jerónimos + Castle + Tile Museum + Tower (€33 combined)
- You're taking 6+ tram/metro rides (€9 value)
- Card cost is €20
- You save €22. Worth it.
But that's a packed, museum-heavy itinerary. Many visitors don't operate that way.
Alternative: Build Your Own Pass
Instead of the card, consider:
- Buy a 72-hour public transport pass (€40) if you're using trams and metros heavily. This is good value standalone.
- Pick 2–3 must-see museums instead of trying to hit them all. Jerónimos + São Jorge Castle alone costs €22 and takes a full day. That's quality over quantity.
- Skip the paid attractions entirely. Lisbon's best bits (Alfama, Graça viewpoint, riverside walks, Food Hall) are free.
The Psychology Play
Here's where the Lisbon Card gets you: you buy it, feel committed to "getting your money's worth," and end up rushing between museums instead of properly enjoying the city. That's worse than the card paying for itself.
Slower travel beats the best deal. If the card makes you stress, skip it.
My Recommendation
- 3-day visitor visiting major attractions? Buy the 72-hour card (€50). You'll hit museums and transport costs of €70+.
- 2-day visitor? Buy the 24-hour card only if you plan to visit 3+ museums. Otherwise, just grab the 24-hour transport pass (€10.60) and skip the card.
- 1-day visitor? Don't bother. Walk, take Tram 28 (€1.50), enjoy free viewpoints and neighbourhoods.
The real value of Lisbon isn't in the museums—it's in the streets, the light, the fado bars, and the cafés. You can experience that for the price of coffee.
