May is one of the best times to visit Lisbon. The city is warm and sunny, the Atlantic breeze keeps it comfortable, and you're just ahead of the summer surge that turns the Alfama and Bairro Alto into visitor queues. Lisbon in May gives you the full experience at a human pace and a price point that still makes sense.
Weather
Temperatures range from 16°C to 24°C in May. Sunshine is the dominant condition, with low rainfall and the kind of light that makes the city's azulejo tiles and white facades look exceptional. A light jacket is useful for the occasional Atlantic breeze and for evenings. It's ideal walking weather in a city that does a lot of walking up and down hills.
Crowds and Prices
Lisbon has become one of Europe's most popular short-break destinations, which means it's never empty. May is busy but it's below the peak that starts in earnest from June. Hotel prices are meaningfully lower than summer, and the city's most photogenic spots, the Alfama viewpoints, the Bica funicular, the Time Out Market, are accessible without fighting through tour groups. Book accommodation a few weeks out and you'll have good options.
What's On
1 May is a public holiday in Portugal. Some local shops close but tourist infrastructure runs normally. There are usually outdoor events and a generally relaxed atmosphere across the city.
Lisbon celebrates its patron saint day on 12 to 13 June, so May is the run-up to the Santos Populares festival season. You'll start to see decorations and preparations appearing in the Alfama neighbourhood towards the end of the month.
The NOS Primavera Sound festival sometimes takes place in late May or early June in Porto, within day-trip distance of Lisbon.
One Thing to Watch
Sintra, the essential day trip from Lisbon, becomes significantly more crowded in May as it does year-round. The palaces, particularly Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira, have timed entry systems for good reason. Book in advance online, take the early train from Rossio station, and plan to be at the main palaces before 10am. Afternoons in Sintra during May can be very busy, and the combination of narrow village streets and tour groups gets claustrophobic.
Our Lisbon travel guide covers the city properly, including how to handle the Sintra day trip without losing half your visit to queues.
