Lisbon in February makes a strong case for itself. Temperatures are mild by northern European standards, the crowds are a fraction of summer levels, and the city's pasteis de nata, fado houses, and Alfama neighbourhood are all fully in play. February is one of the best months in the calendar for Lisbon: you get the city without the heat, the queues, or the tourist pressure that defines it from May onwards. The weather is not guaranteed sunshine, but it is consistently better than anywhere in northern Europe.
Weather
February averages 9C to 15C. Rain falls regularly, often in shorter bursts rather than sustained downpours. A light waterproof layer and a mid-weight jacket cover most scenarios. The sun appears regularly and when it does, sitting in a Bairro Alto square with a coffee is entirely comfortable. Snow is essentially unheard of.
Crowds and Prices
Very low season. The queue for pasteis de nata at Pasteis de Belem is short. Tram 28 is a local commuter service rather than a tourist rollercoaster. Flights from the UK are among the year's cheapest. Hotel prices in Alfama and Bairro Alto are well below summer rates. Valentine's weekend has minimal impact: Lisbon does not have the romantic-city premium of Paris or Venice.
What's On
Carnival runs in February, though Lisbon's celebrations are quieter than those in Torres Vedras, about an hour away, which hosts one of Portugal's largest carnival events. The city does see street events and themed nights around Mardi Gras. Lisbon's fado scene is entirely unaffected by season: evenings in the Alfama's fado houses are as good in February as at any other time of year.
One Thing to Watch
Lisbon is hilly and its cobbled streets and viewpoints become slippery when wet. The Miradouros (viewpoints) are exposed and can be windy and damp after rain. This is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to wear shoes with grip rather than smooth-soled footwear, and to check the morning weather before committing a day to the hillier neighbourhoods.
The Lisbon city guide covers everything from Alfama to the waterfront.
