Lisbon in January is one of Europe's most convincing winter city break arguments. Temperatures are mild, the tourist crowds are at their lowest, prices are down, and the city's food, trams, and viewpoints are all fully operational. If you're based in northern Europe and want warm-ish weather, good food, and no queues, Lisbon in January is worth serious consideration.

Weather

Daytime temperatures average 14°C to 16°C, with evenings cooling to around 8°C. Rain is more frequent in January than in summer, and some days can be grey and drizzly. But clear, sunny January days in Lisbon are genuinely lovely, and they happen regularly. A light jacket and a compact umbrella cover most conditions.

Crowds and Prices

January is low season. The Alfama, Bairro Alto, and Belém are navigable without the summer crowds. The Jerónimos Monastery and the Tower of Belém have shorter queues. Hotel prices and flights drop noticeably from the summer peak. It's one of the most affordable months to visit Lisbon.

What's On

January doesn't have a major city festival, but the fado scene in the Alfama runs year-round and is arguably best experienced in the quieter winter months. The city's food markets, notably the Time Out Market, operate fully. Some beaches within day-trip range, like Cascais, are quiet but scenic for a coastal walk.

One Thing to Watch

Some of the tourist-focused river cruise operators run reduced schedules in January. If a Tagus river tour is on your list, check availability and book ahead rather than assuming it's running on demand.
