Tallinn in September is one of the better kept secrets in European city break planning. The medieval Old Town is extraordinary, the city is excellent value by European standards, and September brings the summer cruise ship crowds down to a manageable level. It rewards being discovered.

Weather

September in Tallinn averages 10 to 16°C. It's cool and distinctly autumnal by late September, with Baltic sea breezes adding to the chill factor in the evenings. Early September can still feel like a mild summer extension; pack accordingly. The Old Town's narrow stone streets and towers look particularly atmospheric in autumn light with fallen leaves from the lime trees around Town Hall Square. Bring a warm jacket for evenings.

Crowds and Prices

Tallinn has a significant cruise ship visitor problem in summer. Multiple ships can dock on a single day, filling the Old Town with day visitors who arrive, shop, and leave in a few hours. The impact on the medieval centre is concentrated but intense. September sees the cruise season wind down, and from mid-month the Old Town becomes genuinely enjoyable. The city is already excellent value relative to western Europe, and September keeps prices well below the summer rate.

What's On

The Tallinn Music Week spring edition is the main music event, but September sees the cultural season open in the city's theatres and concert venues. The Estonian Opera and various cultural institutions run autumn programmes. The Kadriorg Park, one of the finest baroque parks in northern Europe, turns early autumn colour in September, and the Kumu Art Museum in the park is excellent. The Lennusadam Seaplane Harbour museum is one of the most impressive aviation and maritime museums in Europe and worth half a day.

One Thing to Watch

The Old Town is small, intensely picturesque, and can be fully covered in a day's walking. That makes Tallinn a natural two or three night stay rather than a week. If you're extending, the day trip to Lahemaa National Park is excellent in September with its autumn forest walks and manor houses. The Paldiski peninsula and the western islands of Hiiumaa and Saaremaa require more time and planning but reward it.
