April is a reasonable month to visit Tallinn. The Estonian capital has one of the best-preserved medieval old towns in Europe, and April sees it without the summer crowds that can make the narrow streets feel cramped. It is still cold. You will need proper winter-adjacent clothing. But the old town in spring, with its fairy-tale towers and cobblestones beginning to clear of snow, is genuinely striking.
Weather
April in Tallinn ranges from 2C at night to 10C during the day. Cold snaps are possible, particularly early in the month. Snow is rare by April but not impossible. The Baltic wind adds to the chill. Pack a proper warm coat, gloves, and warm layers. By late April temperatures improve toward 14C on good days. The old town is compact and walkable, which helps in cold weather.
Crowds and Prices
Tallinn in summer (June to August) is busy with Scandinavian visitors (it is a short ferry ride from Helsinki). April is significantly quieter. The old town, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and Toompea Castle are accessible without crowds. Hotel prices are low: Tallinn is still affordable compared to most Western European capitals. Easter brings some Finnish and Swedish visitors across on the ferry.
What's On
Tallinn Music Week typically runs in late March to early April and is one of the best new music showcases in the Baltic region. Old Town Days festival is in June, but April's quieter calendar suits visitors who want the city for its architecture and atmosphere rather than events. The Estonian Open Air Museum on the western edge of the city is open from April.
One Thing to Watch
Tallinn's old town restaurants can be expensive for what they are when targeted at tourists. Move one street away from the main Raekoja plats (Town Hall Square) and prices drop significantly while quality improves. The same principle applies to accommodation: a few streets outside the old town walls gives you better value without sacrificing walkability.
