Tallinn Airport (Lennart Meri Tallinn Airport, or TLL) is consistently voted one of the most pleasant airports in Europe — and for good reason. It is small, calm, and just 4km from the city centre. Getting into town takes around 20 minutes and costs almost nothing.

Here is exactly what your options are.

Tram #4: The Best Option for Most Travellers

Tram #4 is the direct, reliable, no-stress route from the airport into the city centre. The stop is a short walk from the terminal — follow signs for public transport.

  • Journey time: Around 15–20 minutes to Viru Keskus (the main city centre stop near the Old Town)
  • Cost: Around €1.50–2 per single journey (pay by contactless card on the tram reader, or buy a paper ticket from the machine at the stop)
  • Frequency: Every 10–15 minutes during the day

Contactless bank cards (Visa, Mastercard) work directly on the tram validators — tap on, no separate ticket needed. This is the easiest option for most visitors arriving with a working card.

The Pilet.ee app also works if you have already registered and loaded credit. But for arrivals, contactless is simpler.

Where Does It Go?

Tram #4 runs from the airport via Viru Keskus (the main interchange near the Old Town) through to the city. Most visitors hop off at Viru Keskus — from there, the Old Town is a five-minute walk.

Bus #2: The Alternative Route

Bus #2 also connects the airport to the city centre. It follows a slightly different route through residential streets and takes around 20–25 minutes. The same ticket pricing and contactless payment applies.

For most visitors, Tram #4 is more straightforward. Bus #2 is worth knowing about if you are heading to a specific part of the city the tram does not serve.

Bolt: The Smart Taxi Option

Bolt is Estonia's own ride-hailing company — now a pan-European platform. Using Bolt from the airport is consistently cheaper and more reliable than hailing a random airport taxi.

  • Cost: Around €7–12 depending on traffic and time of day
  • Wait time: Usually 3–5 minutes after requesting
  • Why Bolt over airport taxis: Pricing is transparent before you book, no cash needed, no negotiating

Download and set up Bolt before you land. Payment is handled in-app. We recommend booking through the Bolt app — it takes the friction out of the first few minutes of any trip.

Random airport taxis are not illegal, but metered fares can be higher and there is no price transparency upfront. Stick with Bolt.

Walking: Technically Possible, Not Worth It

The airport is 4km from the Old Town. You could walk it — around 50 minutes — but the route follows a main road with no real atmosphere or interest. It is not dangerous, just dull.

The only reason to walk is if you are arriving very light with no luggage and want to settle into the city gradually. Otherwise, tram or Bolt serves you better.

Decision Framework

Situation Best Option
Solo, small luggage Tram #4 (cheap, direct, easy)
Group of 2–4 Bolt (comparable cost when split, door to door)
Late night arrival Bolt (trams stop running around midnight)
Early morning Tram #4 (first trams from around 6am)
Heavy luggage Bolt (no stairs, no dragging bags through stops)

A Note on the Airport Itself

Tallinn Airport really is pleasant. There is a calm, slightly Nordic quality to it — good coffee, reasonable food prices, fast security. If you have a long layover, it is not a hardship. Arrivals are straightforward: baggage claim is compact, and you are outside within 10–15 minutes of landing.

Neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood recommendations, transport passes, and how to hit the ground running once you reach the city are all covered in the ConciseTravel Tallinn guide — worth having open before you land.
