Prague has an overtourism problem in summer. The Old Town Square and Charles Bridge feel genuinely saturated in July and August, with tourist groups, stag parties, and the associated economy that serves them creating a city that can be hard to connect with. September is the start of the improvement.
Weather
September in Prague sits between 13 and 21°C. The city's architecture, particularly the Old Town and the Mala Strana below the castle, looks excellent in September's softer light. Early September can still feel warm enough for t-shirts; late September requires a jacket in the evenings. Rain is possible throughout but rarely heavy. The city is very walkable in September conditions.
Crowds and Prices
The stag party crowd drops significantly from mid-September as European school holidays end and the summer party circuit moves elsewhere. Charles Bridge is still busy, but the point where you could actually stop and look at the statues without being pushed becomes possible from mid-month. The Old Town Square tourist restaurants still charge tourist prices, but the streets leading away from the main circuit into Vinohrady and Zizkov return to something like normality. Hotel prices drop and availability improves.
What's On
Prague's classical music season reopens in autumn, with the Prague Symphony Orchestra and the National Theatre running autumn programmes. The Prague Wine Festival runs in October, but September sees harvest events around the Bohemian wine regions, including Melnik just north of the city. The city's jazz clubs, including AghaRTA and Reduta, are active year-round. September is also a good month to visit Kutna Hora (the Bone Church day trip) with fewer tour groups.
One Thing to Watch
Prague Castle is one of the great historic complexes in Europe and takes several hours to do properly. The castle district is at its most crowded between 10 AM and 3 PM. Go early morning, when the Golden Lane and St Vitus Cathedral are manageable, and the views over the city from the castle walls are at their best light. The castle is worth the time but the scheduling matters.
