April is a good month for Prague. The spring markets appear in the Old Town Square, the Vltava is thawing, and the city's extraordinary architecture gets proper natural light rather than the grey of winter. It is busier than January but significantly more pleasant to be in, and it retains some of the value advantage that made Prague famous as a city break destination.
Weather
April in Prague ranges from 6C at night to 15C during the day. Warm spells are possible from mid-month. Rain is possible throughout. A light waterproof and layers are the standard recommendation. Early mornings on Charles Bridge, before the crowds arrive, are worth getting up for in April: the spring light and the empty cobblestones are genuinely atmospheric.
Crowds and Prices
Prague is one of Europe's most popular city break destinations and crowds build through spring. April is noticeably busier than winter but still significantly calmer than June to August. The Easter markets in Old Town Square are the main crowd-builder within the month. Hotel prices are mid-range in April, reasonable by Western European standards.
What's On
Easter markets run in Old Town Square for the week or two surrounding Easter. Traditional Czech Easter decorations (painted eggs, willow branches), food, and handicrafts make these genuinely good markets rather than tourist-only events. The Prague Spring classical music festival begins in May, but April is a good time for concerts at the Municipal House and Rudolfinum.
One Thing to Watch
Charles Bridge is one of the most photogenic places in Europe and one of the most crowded. On a summer day it is a shoulder-to-shoulder experience. In April, it is busy but manageable, and early morning (before 7am) or evening (after 8pm) it is genuinely walkable. Plan your Charles Bridge time for the edges of the day and you will get a very different experience from the midday crowd.
