Prague in October is one of the strongest city break options in Europe, and we say that with confidence. The Old Town in autumn light, with the Vltava river and the castle above, is extraordinary. Summer crowds can make Prague feel like a theme park; October gives it back its dignity. The city is genuinely beautiful and it deserves to be experienced without the full weight of peak tourist season pressing down on it.

Weather

Expect 11-15°C in early October, cooling to 7-10°C by late October. Rain is more frequent through the month. Prague's architecture looks spectacular in grey autumn light, the medieval stone and Gothic spires doing exactly what they were designed to do when the sky goes dramatic behind them. Pack layers and a waterproof. The city's cafe culture is an excellent refuge on wet days.

Crowds and Prices

Significantly quieter than summer. Prague is one of Europe's most visited cities and the summer crowds on Charles Bridge and in the Old Town Square can be exhausting. By October the numbers have dropped dramatically and these iconic spaces become actually enjoyable. Hotel prices drop and Prague, already excellent value by Western European standards, becomes even more so. Good Czech food is affordable year-round; in October the game season menus make it even better.

What's On

The Prague Signal Festival of light art typically runs in October, projecting digital art onto buildings across the city centre. It's a free outdoor event and one of the better reasons to be in Prague specifically in October. The Czech beer culture is year-round, but October's cooler temperatures make sitting in a traditional pivnice with a Pilsner Urquell feel particularly appropriate. The Czech Independent Film Festival runs in October or November.

One Thing to Watch

Charles Bridge at dawn in October is genuinely one of the best urban experiences in Europe. The crowds haven't arrived, the light is low and atmospheric, and the statues and castle above are dramatic in the early mist. Set an alarm. It requires getting up at around 6-7am in October, which is a very different ask from 5am in summer, and the reward is proportionate. Don't leave Prague without doing this at least once.
