Prague in February is one of the most visually rewarding winter city breaks in Europe. Snow on the Old Town rooftops, frost on the Charles Bridge, and the castle lit up over the Vltava river are not marketing constructs: they actually happen and they are worth seeing. The trade-off is genuine cold and, on Valentine's weekend, a notable price spike. Prague's romantic reputation is well established and hotels in the Old Town and Mala Strana fill up around the 14th. Visit either side of that weekend and you get cold, quiet, cheap Prague at its most atmospheric.

Weather

February averages -2C to 4C. Snow is common and the city is frequently covered for several days at a time. Wind in the open plazas, particularly the Old Town Square and up on the castle hill, makes it feel colder. Pack full winter gear: thermal layers, a heavy coat, gloves, hat, and waterproof boots. The effort is rewarded: Prague in snow is genuinely beautiful.

Crowds and Prices

Low season outside Valentine's weekend. The Charles Bridge is walkable without being pressed against other tourists. Prague Castle is accessible at your own pace. Flights and hotels in the first three weeks of February are among the year's most affordable. Valentine's weekend pushes Old Town and Mala Strana hotel prices up: book early if you want to be in the heart of the city on those dates.

What's On

Prague Carnival runs in the pre-Lenten period with events in the Old Town and beyond. The Czech beer culture runs year-round and the city's traditional pubs (pivnice) are perfect winter venues. Prague's classical music calendar, centred on venues like the Rudolfinum and the State Opera, is in full swing through winter.

One Thing to Watch

The cobblestones on the Charles Bridge and through the Old Town alleys become icy overnight and stay dangerous until late morning when foot traffic and any available sun clear them. Early morning walks in February require careful footing. This is specifically a morning issue: the same stones that were hazardous at 7am are often fine by 10am.
