Munich in March is an underrated city break. Oktoberfest is months away, the city is operating at normal pace, and the beer halls, which are a year-round institution rather than a seasonal novelty, are excellent in cold weather. The museum quarter, the Marienplatz, Nymphenburg Palace, and the English Garden are all accessible without the tourist volumes of summer. March gives you Munich as a functioning, confident city rather than a festival host.

Weather

March in Munich is cold. Temperatures range from 1°C to 2°C at night to 8°C to 10°C during the day. Snow is possible, particularly early in the month, and cold Alpine air means it can feel sharper than the numbers suggest. A warm coat, layers, and waterproof shoes are essential. Late March brings milder days reaching 13°C to 14°C, and the English Garden starts to show signs of spring. March can also bring clear, bright days that make the city's architecture and the Alps in the distance look excellent.

Crowds and Prices

Munich in March is significantly quieter than Oktoberfest season (September to October) or summer. Marienplatz, the Deutsches Museum, and the Alte Pinakothek are all manageable without queues. Hotels are priced at some of their lowest rates of the year. The Christmas markets are long finished. It is one of the calmest times to visit the city and genuinely good value by Munich's not-cheap standards.

What's On

The Starkbierzeit (Strong Beer Festival) runs at the Nockherberg beer hall in late February and early March. This is Munich's pre-Lent strong beer tradition, with special seasonal beers served only during this period. It is a local institution with a completely different atmosphere from Oktoberfest: more about the beer itself and less about the international party. Worth experiencing if you are in the city early in March.

One Thing to Watch

Nymphenburg Palace and its surrounding gardens are worth visiting in March, but the full garden experience is better in warmer months. The palace interior and the Marstallmuseum (royal carriages and sleighs) are excellent in cold weather. The BMW Museum and BMW World are popular indoor alternatives for rainy March days and are well worth the time.
