April in Munich is the beer garden moment. As soon as the weather lifts above 10C, Munich's famous outdoor beer gardens open and Bavarian outdoor culture reasserts itself. It is a genuinely pleasant month to visit: better weather than winter, noticeably cheaper than Oktoberfest, and a city that looks excellent in spring light.
Weather
April in Munich ranges from 5C at night to 14C during the day. It can be warmer, with good spells pushing to 18C from mid-month. Rain is possible but not dominant. The Alpine backdrop to the south is still snow-capped and visible on clear days. Layers are needed for early mornings and evenings, but by afternoon a lighter jacket is often sufficient.
Crowds and Prices
Munich is one of Germany's most visited cities but April is not peak season. The Marienplatz, the Englischer Garten, and the main museums are busy at weekends but manageable. Hotel prices are notably lower than September (Oktoberfest) when the city reaches maximum capacity. Easter weekend brings domestic German visitors and a modest price increase for central hotels.
What's On
The beer gardens opening is the main April event. The Englischer Garten's Chinesischer Turm beer garden is one of the most famous in the world and April marks its return to full operation. Nymphenburg Palace gardens come alive in spring. The Munich Residenz and its museums are excellent for rainy days. Dachau Memorial, about 30 minutes from the city, is an important and sobering site that requires advance time in your planning.
One Thing to Watch
The Englischer Garten's Eisbach standing wave attracts surfers year-round, but spring runoff makes it particularly impressive in April. It is a free, genuinely unusual Munich sight. Easter weekend causes a moderate price and crowd spike. Oktoberfest in late September is the extreme version: if budget is a priority, April is dramatically better value for the same city.
