Munich in December is one of the flagship European Christmas market destinations, and it earns the reputation. The Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz is one of Germany's oldest and most traditional, the city's beer halls switch from Oktoberfest mode to Christmas mode seamlessly, and the Bavarian Alps provide a backdrop that makes the whole thing feel like a film set. The honest version: early December is manageable, the week before Christmas is extremely busy, and the city is not cheap.
Weather
Cold, with a high probability of snow, particularly in the later weeks of December. Munich averages -1°C to 4°C in December, and snow is common enough to plan for rather than hope for. A heavy winter coat, waterproof boots, and warm accessories are essential. The good news: Munich in the snow, particularly around Marienplatz and the English Garden, is exactly as good as it looks in the photographs.
Crowds and Prices
Munich's Christmas market is one of the most famous in Europe and the crowds reflect that. Early December weekday visits are the best balance of atmosphere and manageable crowds. Weekend visits, particularly from the second week of December onward, can see Marienplatz genuinely packed in the evenings. Hotel prices are elevated through December compared to the non-festival months. The city has multiple Christmas markets across different neighbourhoods, so spreading visits between them, Schwabing, Haidhausen, and the medieval market at the museum complex, helps avoid the worst of the Marienplatz crush.
What's On
The main Christkindlmarkt at Marienplatz runs from late November through 24 December. The market at Schwabing is smaller and more local in feel. The medieval Christmas market at the Wittelsbacherplatz is one of the more distinctive options, with historical artisans and period costumes. The Residenz, Munich's royal palace, has Christmas exhibitions. The beer halls, particularly Hofbräuhaus and the Augustiner Stammhaus, are in full festive swing. A December evening in a Munich beer hall with glühwein, pretzels, and roast pork is one of December in Europe's genuinely good experiences.
One Thing to Watch
The area immediately around Marienplatz in the evenings from about 18 December to 24 December is at maximum crowd density. If you want to see the market, come early in the day or on a weekday, or use the city's other markets as alternatives. The market closes completely on Christmas Eve.
