June is one of the best months for Munich. Oktoberfest gets all the attention, but Munich in June is arguably the city at its most liveable: warm enough for the biergartens to be running properly, long days, and a city that genuinely knows how to enjoy summer. Come for the beer gardens, stay for the museums and the Alpine backdrop.
Weather
Expect highs of 22-26°C through June, with good sunshine and the occasional Alpine thunderstorm. The English Garden comes into its own in June, with sunbathers, the famous river surfers at the Eisbach, and packed biergartens under the chestnut trees. Pack layers for the evenings, which can turn cool under clear Alpine skies.
Crowds and Prices
Munich in June is busy but not Oktoberfest-busy. The major museums, including the Deutsches Museum, the Alte Pinakothek, and the BMW World, are all manageable. Marienplatz and the central tourist zone see high footfall. Accommodation is reasonable compared to Oktoberfest season. The city has good public transport and getting around is straightforward.
What's On
Tollwood Summer Festival runs from late June through July, bringing world music, theatre, and excellent food markets to the Olympic Park. It's one of Munich's best events and free to enter (individual performances are ticketed). The English Garden biergartens, including the legendary Chinesischer Turm, are at peak capacity in June.
One Thing to Watch
The English Garden's river surfers at the Eisbach are a genuine Munich experience and worth going to watch. But the garden itself is vast: 3.7km long. Work out which part you're heading to before setting off. The southern section near the Haus der Kunst and the Eisbach is the most visited. The northern stretches around the Kleinhesseloher See are quieter and equally good in June.
