Munich in February has a legitimate claim on your winter travel calendar. Fasching, Bavaria's pre-Lenten carnival, is one of Germany's most enthusiastic celebrations: the last weekend before Ash Wednesday fills the city with costumes, parties, and an atmosphere that is completely different from the Oktoberfest crowd but no less committed. Outside the Fasching peak, February is quiet, cold, and affordable, with the city's world-class museums and beer hall culture fully operational.
Weather
February in Munich averages -2C to 4C. Snow is common and settles. The Alps are visible on clear days from the city outskirts. Pack full winter gear: thermal layers, a heavy coat, hat, gloves, and waterproof boots. The English Garden is beautiful under snow, and the Deutsches Museum and Alte Pinakothek provide excellent cold-weather indoor options.
Crowds and Prices
Low season outside Fasching. The Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt are calm. Museum Island (Munich's Kunstareal museum district) is unhurried. Flights and hotels are cheap. During Fasching weekend, central Munich fills with revellers and hotels see a price spike, particularly the Friday and Saturday before Ash Wednesday.
What's On
Fasching is the centrepiece. The costume parades, masked balls, and general street revelry peak on Fasching Sunday and Shrove Tuesday (Faschingsdienstag). The Viktualienmarkt has its own traditional celebration. Beyond Fasching, Munich's concert halls and opera house (Bayerische Staatsoper) are in full winter season. Day trips to the Alps for skiing are straightforward from Munich in February.
One Thing to Watch
Fasching Sunday and Monday transform central Munich in ways that can catch non-participants off guard. The U-Bahn fills with costumed revellers, bars are at capacity, and the city operates in a distinctly different mode. If you are not participating, it is an interesting thing to observe. If you are not expecting it, it can be disorienting. Check Fasching dates before booking your trip.
