Miami works for a one-day visit if you pick a focus and don't try to cover the whole city. Miami Beach and downtown Miami are essentially separate places connected by causeways, and each has a completely different character. One day means choosing one side and doing it well, or splitting the day and accepting that you're skimming both.

Getting In and Out

Miami International Airport is around 20 to 30 minutes from South Beach or downtown Miami. The Metrorail connects MIA to downtown. For South Beach, a taxi or rideshare is the most practical option. Fort Lauderdale Airport, used by some low-cost carriers, adds around 45 minutes more travel time.

Morning

South Beach is the obvious starting point. Ocean Drive, the Art Deco strip running along the beach, is best walked in the morning before the heat builds. The Miami Design Preservation League runs guided tours of the Art Deco Historic District, but even an independent walk along Ocean Drive between 5th and 15th Street gives you the full spectacle.

The Wolfsonian Museum on Washington Avenue is a small but outstanding design museum with a strong collection of Art Deco and early modernist objects. It opens at noon; check current hours.

The beach itself is cleanly maintained and the water is warm. A morning swim is not a bad use of time.

Afternoon

Cross to Wynwood on the mainland (around 20 minutes by car or rideshare). The Wynwood Walls are a large-scale outdoor street art installation in what was once a derelict warehouse district. It's now Miami's most visited cultural attraction and genuinely impressive as an outdoor gallery. The surrounding neighbourhood has good restaurants and independent shops.

Lunch at Wynwood Kitchen, or one of the many restaurants on NW 2nd Avenue, which have made the area a destination for food beyond the art.

Little Havana, further west on Calle Ocho, gives you Cuban Miami: cigar shops, domino parks, and Versailles restaurant (a Cuban institution). It's 15 minutes from Wynwood.

Evening (if time allows)

The Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) on Biscayne Bay in downtown Miami is good for a late afternoon visit. The waterfront setting is as impressive as the collection.

For dinner, South Beach or the Design District have the most options at different price points. Miami eats late: 8pm is normal, 9pm is common.

What to Skip

The Everglades tours from Miami typically take four to five hours. Save them for a dedicated day if you're spending more time in South Florida.

Key West is an all-day drive from Miami. Not for a one-day visit to the city.
