Madrid in July and August is hot, and many Madrilenos actually leave the city for the coast. September brings them back, the city wakes up, and the combination of warm weather and local life returning to normal makes it one of the more enjoyable months in the Spanish capital.
Weather
Early September in Madrid still pushes 28 to 32°C. The city sits high on the Meseta plateau at 650 metres, which means slightly cooler evenings than the coast but very warm days through early autumn. By late September temperatures drop to around 22 to 26°C, which is pleasant for the museum circuit and the long evening paseo culture. Pack light clothes and sun protection: the sun at Madrid's altitude is stronger than it feels.
Crowds and Prices
Madrid's summer sees a drop in domestic visitors (who go to the coast) but continued international tourism. September sees both return to normal. The Prado and Reina Sofia are manageable without August-level queue times, though the Guernica room at the Reina Sofia is always popular. Hotel prices across Malasana, La Latina, and Chueca drop from peak summer, and the city's tapas bars and vermouth spots fill with a better mix of locals and visitors.
What's On
Madrid's theatre and flamenco season reopens fully in September after summer. The city's major flamenco venues run their regular shows through the month. The Feria de Otono, Madrid's autumn fairs programme, begins in September with bullfighting at Las Ventas, which remains one of the most attended spectacles in the city for visitors regardless of personal position on the practice. The surrounding villages and parks, including the Parque del Retiro, see harvest and autumn food events.
One Thing to Watch
The heat in early September still matters at outdoor sites. The Retiro park and the Royal Palace courtyard are both exposed. Go to outdoor sights in the morning before 11 AM or in the late afternoon after 5 PM. The midday hours are best spent at the Prado, the Thyssen, or in one of the city's excellent lunch spots, where the menu del dia gives you a three-course lunch for a very reasonable price.
