June is a strong time for Madrid. The city is lively and social in a way that's genuinely different from northern European capitals, the art museums are exceptional, and the heat is building but hasn't yet hit the brutal July and August levels. Madrid in June is Spain doing what it does well.
Weather
Expect highs of 28-32°C through June, with intense sun and low humidity. Madrid sits on an elevated plateau and the heat is dry rather than sticky, which makes it more bearable than coastal cities at similar temperatures. Mornings are the best time for outdoor exploration. Evenings are warm and perfect for Madrid's natural rhythm of late dinners and outdoor terraces. Pack sun cream, light summer clothes, and a hat.
Crowds and Prices
Madrid handles tourists well for a major capital. The Prado, the Reina Sofia (home of Guernica), and the Thyssen-Bornemisza are all busy in June but manageable with advance tickets. The streets around Gran Via and Sol are very tourist-facing. Malasana, Chueca, and Lavapies are the neighbourhoods where Madrid feels more like itself. Prices are reasonable by Western European capital standards.
What's On
Madrid Pride is one of the world's biggest, centred on the Chueca neighbourhood in late June. The main parade typically runs on the last Saturday of June and draws enormous crowds. The city-wide atmosphere in the days around Pride is excellent. San Isidro festival is in May, but June continues that festive calendar with open-air concerts, verbenas (street parties), and the city's outdoor cinema season.
One Thing to Watch
The Prado is world-class and if you're not a regular museum visitor, a single visit to the Prado is enough for most people. Don't try to see everything in one go: the collection is vast. Two to three hours focused on the Velazquez, Goya, and El Greco rooms is a better experience than a three-hour march through the whole building. Book timed entry in advance.
