May is one of the best months to visit Madrid. The weather is warm without being oppressive, the city celebrates its patron saint festival in mid-May, and crowds are building but not yet at the summer peak that can make the Prado and the Golden Triangle feel relentless. Madrid in May has genuine energy without the punishing July heat.
Weather
Temperatures range from 14°C to 24°C in May, with sunny, dry conditions typical of the Castilian plateau. It can be warm in the middle of the day and noticeably cooler in the evenings, which is typical for Madrid at altitude. Light summer clothes work during the day, but a light jacket is useful after dark. Sunshine is reliable.
Crowds and Prices
Madrid is popular year-round but May is below the summer peak. Hotels are meaningfully cheaper than in July and August, and the main museums, the Prado, the Reina Sofia, the Thyssen-Bornemisza, are busy but manageable if you book timed entry in advance. The city's outdoor cafe culture is fully operational, and the terrace bars in La Latina and Malasana are at their best.
What's On
San Isidro, Madrid's most important festival, takes place around 15 May in honour of the city's patron saint. It runs for several days and includes free outdoor concerts in Retiro Park, bullfighting at Las Ventas (the main bullfighting season runs throughout May), and a general festive atmosphere across the city. It's one of the better times to experience Madrid at its most culturally itself.
1 May is a public holiday in Spain. Some businesses close and there are often outdoor events and marches.
One Thing to Watch
The San Isidro festival brings Madrid's biggest crowds of the year to certain areas. Las Ventas and the immediate surroundings during bullfighting season are very busy, and tickets for the main corridas during the festival fortnight need to be booked well in advance. Even if bullfighting isn't your thing, the general city atmosphere during San Isidro is worth experiencing. The free concerts in Retiro Park are a genuine highlight.
