Madrid in March is underrated and that is exactly why it works so well. The Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen are three of Europe's greatest art museums and in March you can move through them without the crowds. The city's tapas and wine bar culture is fully operational, the weather is mild without being hot, and prices are lower than the summer peak. Spain in spring is a strong choice, and Madrid delivers.
Weather
March temperatures in Madrid range from 6°C at night to 14°C to 16°C during the day. The city sits on a high plateau and can be cooler than coastal Spanish cities, with crisp mornings and occasional cold spells, particularly in early March. Rain is possible but the city averages only around 30mm in March, which is relatively dry. A light jacket and layers are the right approach. Late March regularly brings warm, sunny afternoons that justify the city's reputation as a place that lives outdoors.
Crowds and Prices
March is solidly shoulder season for Madrid. The three major museums on the Paseo del Arte, the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen, are all more accessible than in summer. The Retiro Park and the Gran Via are busy but manageable. Hotels across the city are priced below peak-season rates.## What's On
Las Fallas, Valencia's major fire festival, takes place in mid-March (19 March), and some visitors combine a Madrid trip with a side trip to Valencia for the festival. Madrid's own March calendar includes art exhibitions, fashion events, and football at the Bernabeu or the Metropolitano. Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid both play home La Liga fixtures through March, making tickets worth checking. Madrid Open tennis is an April event, just after the March window.
One Thing to Watch
The Prado does not require advance booking in the same way that some other European museums do, but specific temporary exhibitions can generate longer waits. The Reina Sofia, home to Picasso's Guernica, has free entry after 7pm on weekdays and all day Sunday, which attracts a crowd. If you want to see Guernica without the queue, go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning rather than a free-entry window.
