Madrid in autumn is one of southern Europe's better-value city breaks. September still carries real summer warmth but the brutal August heat has broken. October is a strong window: 18-22 degrees, excellent museum weather, and the tapas culture at its most accessible without summer tourist pressure. November turns genuinely cool, the Retiro park fills with golden leaves, and the city's indoor culture -- the Prado, the Reina Sofia, the flamenco shows -- becomes the natural focus. Packing for it rewards thinking across the full temperature range.

The Autumn Layering Problem

September in Madrid averages 26-30 degrees during the day -- still hot, particularly in the middle of the day. Evenings cool to 17-19 degrees, pleasant for outdoor dining. October drops to 18-22 degrees in the day and noticeably cooler in the evenings: 10-13 degrees after dark. November averages 11-15 degrees in the day and cold evenings around 5-8 degrees.

Madrid's altitude (it is the highest capital city in the European Union) contributes to the temperature range. The cold evenings arrive fast as the sun drops. A 20-degree October afternoon can become a 10-degree evening within an hour.

Madrid-Specific Essentials

A reliable mid-layer for evenings. This is your core item across all three months. A wool jumper, a leather jacket, or a smart cardigan handles the September evening drop and October outdoor dining. By November, this goes under a proper outer layer.

A proper jacket for November. Something warm enough for Madrid's November evenings -- a wool coat, a padded jacket, or a down layer. The Retiro morning walks and the late-night tapas bar exits both require it.

Comfortable walking shoes. Madrid involves significant walking: the museum triangle between the Prado, Reina Sofia, and Thyssen is a real distance, the Gran Via is long, and the tapas bars of La Latina and Malasana reward on-foot exploration. Cushioned, supportive shoes handle the full day comfortably.

Sun protection for September and October. Madrid sun is strong through October. Sunscreen and sunglasses remain relevant, particularly in the middle of the day.

Smart casual options for evenings. Madrid takes evening dining seriously. The restaurants and bars in Chueca, Malasana, and the Barrio de Las Letras have a well-dressed clientele. Smart casual handles almost everything without requiring formal wear.

A light waterproof for October and November. Madrid does see autumn rain, more common in November. A packable rain layer or a compact umbrella handles the occasional shower.

What to Leave Behind

Sandals for October and November. September viable. From October, closed shoes are the practical choice.

Only summer fabrics. September daywear is summer. October onwards requires real layers.

Heavy formal wear. Madrid is stylish but not rigid. A smart coat and presentable clothes cover the dress code comfortably.

Madrid Autumn Suits the Museum Culture

October in Madrid gives you the Prado without summer queues, the Reina Sofia with room to actually stand in front of Guernica, and the Retiro park in autumn colour. The evening tapas culture runs later than anywhere in Europe and benefits from cooler temperatures. Pack for the evening drop and the museums and Madrid autumn is a strong city break.
