April is one of the best months to visit Lisbon. The weather is warm enough to enjoy the outdoor esplanadas and the Tagus waterfront without summer heat, the crowds are building but not overwhelming, and the city is in full spring mode. It is also a significant month in Portuguese history: 25 April is Dia da Liberdade (Freedom Day), commemorating the 1974 Carnation Revolution.

Weather

April in Lisbon brings daytime temperatures of 17C to 20C, with mild evenings around 11C. Sunshine is common and reliable. Some spring rain occurs, but it is rarely sustained. This is some of the best weather in Europe in April, and significantly warmer than northern European capitals. A light jacket and sunscreen cover you for most conditions.

Crowds and Prices

Lisbon has become one of Europe's most popular city break destinations. April is already busy, particularly at the Belem waterfront (Jeronimos Monastery and the Tower), the Alfama viewpoints, and the Bairro Alto. Hotels are mid-range but rising, and the city no longer offers the bargains it did a decade ago. Book accommodation early, particularly for the Easter and Freedom Day long weekends.

What's On

Freedom Day (25 April) is a public holiday with a significant national ceremony in Lisbon. Carnation flowers are worn and sold across the city. It is a moving reminder of Portugal's democratic history and worth timing your visit around. Easter week brings religious processions, particularly in the Alfama. The Lisbon Half Marathon typically runs in late March, with the recovery energy still in the air in early April.

One Thing to Watch

Freedom Day (25 April) is when central Lisbon is at its most emotionally charged and also its most crowded. Public transport is busier and some attractions have modified hours. It is worth experiencing the day rather than avoiding it, but plan your movements in advance and expect reduced transport frequency if you are heading to Belem or the airport.
