The Lake District in March is a different proposition from the summer version. The car parks are not full, the popular fells are walkable without the trail jams of August, and the light on the water in early spring has a quality that photographs do not quite capture. It is cold, it will probably rain, and some paths will be boggy, but for walkers who want the fells to themselves, March is genuinely excellent.
Weather
March in the Lake District is cool, wet, and variable. Temperatures range from 3°C to 9°C, with higher fells colder and sometimes snow-covered into mid-March. Rain is a near certainty at some point during any visit. Wind on exposed ridges is a serious consideration for walkers. Pack proper waterproof walking gear, warm layers, and boots with ankle support. Late March can bring drier spells and the first genuinely spring-like days, but do not build an itinerary around good weather.
Crowds and Prices
March is firmly shoulder season for the Lake District. Windermere, Ambleside, and Keswick are busy on weekends but quiet on weekdays. The most popular routes, Catbells, Scafell Pike, and Helvellyn, see a fraction of their summer foot traffic. Accommodation is cheaper than from Easter onward. Self-catering cottages and B&Bs in Grasmere, Hawkshead, and Coniston are priced well below the summer premium. Book a weekend in late March around Easter early, as that is when the post-winter influx begins.
What's On
The daffodils associated with Wordsworth's famous poem are at their best in March, particularly in Glencoyne Park near Ullswater. This is genuinely one of the best times to visit the valleys for wildflowers. Boating and water sports on Windermere begin operating more fully from mid-March. Some of the smaller cafes and accommodation options reopen after winter closures during this period.
One Thing to Watch
Some fell paths, particularly higher routes to Scafell Pike and Helvellyn via the ridges, can still have ice and snow in early March. Navigation skills and appropriate gear matter more in early spring than in summer. Check the Lake District weather forecast and mountain conditions before attempting higher routes. For lower lakeside walks, March is perfectly accessible with standard waterproof hiking kit.
