April is one of the more rewarding months to visit the Lake District, with a significant caveat: the weather is unpredictable and you need to plan for it properly. The lambs are in the fields, the waterfalls are running high from spring rain, the daffodils are out across the valleys, and the Easter week crowds are the only time the region feels genuinely overrun.
Weather
April temperatures in the Lake District range from 4C at night to 12C during the day, occasionally warmer on clear days. Rain is frequent and can be heavy. Wind on the higher fells is a serious consideration. Full waterproofs, warm layers, and proper walking boots are not optional if you plan to hike. A base layer, fleece, and waterproof shell covers you for most conditions.
Crowds and Prices
The Lake District is popular year-round with domestic UK visitors. April is shoulder season except for the Easter long weekend, when it becomes one of the busiest periods of the year. Windermere, Bowness, and Ambleside fill up over Easter, accommodation prices peak, and the more accessible viewpoints get crowded. The fells above the tourist towns are significantly quieter even at peak periods.
What's On
Wordsworth Country is at its finest in April. Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount (both connected to William Wordsworth) are open and accessible. The Kendal Mountain Festival takes place in November, but the spring walking season begins properly in April. The Egremont Crab Fair is in September, but local agricultural shows and events start appearing on village calendars from April onward.
One Thing to Watch
Easter week is when the Lake District absorbs the largest number of visitors in the shortest time. Car parks fill before 10am at popular spots like Tarn Hows and the Langdale Pikes trailheads. The Windermere ferries have queues. Arrive at popular spots before 8:30am, park in village car parks and walk, or choose lesser-known valleys like Longsleddale or Kentmere that see a fraction of the visitor numbers.
The Lake District is one of England's most special landscapes, and April, outside of Easter week, is a genuinely lovely time to explore it.
