Seven days in Los Angeles is a solid trip, but you will still leave things undone. LA is not really one city, it is a collection of distinct neighbourhoods and communities spread across a vast area, and no single week will let you see all of it. A week gives you enough time to get past the tourist surface and spend real time in a few parts of the city, but it requires a car and a plan.

What a Week Actually Gets You

Seven days is enough to see the genuinely different versions of LA. Santa Monica and Venice are the beach side: the pier, the boardwalk, the outdoor gym at Muscle Beach, and the canal neighbourhood a few blocks inland. Hollywood is the industry side: the Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theatre, Griffith Observatory for the best view of the Hollywood sign, and the Hollywood Bowl if something is on.

Downtown LA has improved dramatically and deserves more than most visitors give it. The Broad (contemporary art), MOCA, the Grand Central Market, the Arts District, and Little Tokyo are all in the same area. The Getty Center on the hill above Bel Air is one of the best museums in America and free to visit (parking costs extra).

Culver City, Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz each have their own food and culture scenes. Koreatown, Boyle Heights, and Leimert Park give you different cultural perspectives on the city. A week gives you time to choose a few of these and actually spend time in them rather than passing through.

What Still Gets Left Out

Seven days does not get you to Malibu properly, the San Fernando Valley, or anywhere beyond the city that Los Angeles trips sometimes include. Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara, and San Diego are all within range but each requires a day or more. The Griffith Park hiking trails deserve more than most visitors give them. The museum row on Wilshire (LACMA, La Brea Tar Pits) is worth a full day that often gets squeezed.

How to Structure the Week

Days 1 and 2 go to Santa Monica and Hollywood. Beach and boardwalk on day one. Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood area on day two.

Days 3 and 4 go to Downtown and the Eastside. The Broad, Grand Central Market, and the Arts District on day three. Silver Lake, Echo Park, and Los Feliz on day four.

Day 5 is the Getty Center. Build in most of a morning. Combine with Brentwood and the farmers market at the original Farmers Market in the afternoon.

Day 6 is the beach day or a longer drive. Malibu along the Pacific Coast Highway with a stop at Point Dume for the view.

Day 7 is for Koreatown, any museum you missed, or a return to the part of the city you liked best.

A car is not optional in LA. Book it before you arrive.
